Planning a classic dining room

Plan a classic dining room around the table, seated guests and the movement around them. A beautiful dining set works best when chairs can be used comfortably, cabinet doors can open and the room remains easy to navigate. This guide helps home buyers compare AVELOR dining-room furniture before requesting a quotation.

Start with everyday seating and occasional hosting

Write down how many people usually dine together and your larger hosting requirement. Distinguish a frequent need from a rare occasion. Ask for the exact table and chair dimensions and a proposed seating arrangement. The number of chairs in a styled photograph is not a confirmed capacity or a promise that all chairs are included.

Test the whole arrangement on your floor plan

Draw the room with doors, windows, radiators and fixed features. Add the table, chairs and any cabinet or sideboard you intend to include. Measure the usable room after those pieces are placed, not just the distance between the walls. Open doors and drawers and check the route from the kitchen.

As a starting reference, Ethan Allen’s dining-table guide recommends approximately three feet (91 cm) between the table and walls or surrounding furniture. Treat this as a planning reference, not a guarantee of fit or an accessibility standard. Your chair depth, chair movement and household requirements can call for more space.

Choose shape and scale together

A table's shape should relate to the room's outline and the way people move through it. Before deciding between an oval, rectangular or round arrangement, mark the proposed footprint and simulate pulling out the chairs. Arredoclassic’s table-selection guide discusses proportion as well as style. Ask AVELOR which shapes and sizes are available in your shortlisted collection rather than assuming every option can be made.

Allow the dining furniture to lead the decoration

With ornate furniture, choose what should draw the eye first: a tabletop, a decorative chair back or a coordinated display piece. Keep surrounding colours related and avoid competing patterns at every level. Compare finishes in the room's own daylight and evening lighting where possible. Screen colours can shift, so request a physical reference if available.

If you plan to use a rug, test it with chairs pulled out as well as tucked in. Ballard Designs’ rug-planning reference explains this relationship. Decide on your actual furniture dimensions before purchasing a rug. Lighting position, wall decoration and electrical work can then be coordinated with the final room plan.

Separate the set from the styling

For each quotation, list the table, chair quantities, armchairs if applicable, and any storage pieces as separate lines. Confirm finishes, upholstery, assembly requirements and the supplied components. Mirrors, chandeliers, rugs, tableware and decorative objects in room photographs should be treated as styling unless specifically itemised.

Common questions

Can I buy only the pieces I need?

Specify the pieces and quantities in your enquiry. Availability and pricing must be confirmed for that arrangement.

Should living and dining furniture match exactly?

They can share a collection or repeat selected colours and shapes. Start with the living-room buying guide if the spaces connect, then compare both rooms together.
