Choosing a classic sofa set for your living room

A classic sofa set should suit the way you use your room as well as its proportions. Start with the people who will sit there, measure the available space and delivery route, then compare decorative details and upholstery. This guide is for private-home buyers considering AVELOR's classic living room furniture.

Begin with a room brief

Decide whether this is a formal reception room, an everyday family living room or a room that does both. Note your usual number of guests and whether you prefer several separate seats or a more continuous arrangement. Identify what must stay: a fireplace, television, rug, cabinet or inherited piece. These decisions give the furniture a purpose before you choose a collection.

Measure the room and the route into it

Record the room's length and width, doors, windows, fixed furniture and the direction doors swing. Mark a proposed sofa footprint with removable tape, then walk through your normal routes. Include armchairs and occasional tables in the exercise. Ask for the overall width, depth and height of every proposed piece; a collection photograph cannot establish its size.

Next measure the narrowest entrance, stairs, landings and lift doors. A piece that fits its final position may still be difficult to bring inside. Ethan Allen’s furniture-delivery measuring guide explains why corners, clearances and architectural obstacles matter. Send route photographs when a turn or staircase is uncertain, and request confirmation against the packed dimensions.

Compare comfort separately from appearance

Ask about seat height and depth, cushion construction and whether cushions are fixed or removable. Mention preferences such as upright seating or a softer sitting position. When a physical trial is unavailable, request clear dimensions and close-up photographs rather than relying on the word “comfortable”. Keep the needs of the people using the room at the centre of the decision.

Choose a focal point and a consistent finish

Ornate frames and decorative silhouettes can establish a strong focal point. Give them room to be seen and repeat selected colours elsewhere instead of adding a different decorative feature to every surface. Arredoclassic’s sofa-arrangement guide is a useful reference for coordinating seating within a classical interior. It describes that brand's collections; it does not establish AVELOR's materials or manufacturing origin.

Compare the Nida, Riva and Sultan photographs, then shortlist a room arrangement. Ask for separate finish and upholstery references before approving colour. A gold-tone appearance in a photograph does not identify the underlying material or finishing process.

Ask about everyday care before choosing fabric

Explain whether the room receives strong daylight, frequent use or visits from children and pets. Request the fabric composition, relevant performance information and its specific cleaning instructions. Designers Guild’s care guide shows why the correct cleaning method depends on the fabric. Do not assume a removable cover is washable or use a treatment without the supplier's instructions.

Your sofa enquiry checklist

  • Collection and preferred pieces, with links or marked photographs.
  • Room plan, door positions and measurements in one stated unit.
  • Usual seating needs and comfort preferences.
  • Colour references and any requested customisation.
  • Delivery country, city, postcode and access limitations.
  • Desired timing, budget range and details still requiring confirmation.

Common questions

Does a sofa-set photograph show everything included?

Use it as a styling reference. Request a written item list and quantities; tables, accessories and other photographed pieces may be quoted separately.

Can I coordinate living and dining rooms?

Start with a shared collection or selected finish references. See the dining-room planning guide before choosing the corresponding arrangement.
