Buying classical furniture for a home in the United States

AVELOR Journal 27 October 2026

A practical brief for US home buyers comparing classical sofa and dining sets from an international enquiry catalogue.

If you are considering classical furniture for a home in the United States, compare the whole order rather than the furniture photograph alone. A suitable sofa or dining set needs a clear specification, a workable entrance route and a written delivery proposal for your address.

AVELOR welcomes US enquiries for classical sofa sets and dining furniture. This is a planning guide for an enquiry; it is not a statement that a selected model is in US stock or that a particular delivery service has already been arranged.

Make measurements usable across teams

If your room plan is in feet and inches, label it clearly. Ask for the furniture dimensions in the same unit or keep both units beside each other. One inch equals 2.54 centimetres. Avoid a drawing with unlabelled numbers that different people may interpret differently.

Record the overall dimensions of each piece, then measure doors, corridors, stairs and lift openings on the route to the room. For a house with a tight turn or an apartment with a service lift, photographs and a simple route sketch can be more useful than a single doorway width. Ethan Allen’s delivery measuring guide shows the range of access points worth checking.

Compare a complete item list

Identify the model, quantities, upholstery and finish reference for every piece. Distinguish sofas, armchairs, occasional tables, dining chairs and storage. Mark furniture or accessories already owned. Ask the quotation to name any pictured items that are excluded.

Use the luxury sofa comparison sheet for seating. For a dining room, use the dining-set schedule. Both turn a broad preference into a proposal that can be checked line by line.

Separate furniture from destination costs

Request the quoted currency and a breakdown of furniture, requested options, packaging, transport, insurance and destination services where applicable. Ask who arranges clearance and who is responsible for any duties, taxes, handling, storage or final delivery. Keep unknown costs visible until they have been checked for your shipment.

US Customs and Border Protection publishes guidance on furniture purchased abroad for personal use. Use the current guidance and a qualified customs or freight professional for the proposed goods and origin. Do not assume that a general example establishes the charges or procedure for your order.

What does delivery actually include?

Confirm whether the proposal ends at a port, kerbside, building entrance or the room where the furniture will be used. Ask separately about unloading, stairs, lift bookings, unpacking, assembly and packaging removal. Words such as delivery or shipping do not answer all of these questions on their own.

For an apartment or managed community, ask the building team about booking windows, vehicle access and documentation required from the delivery crew. Share those requirements before accepting the proposal. If an installer is separate from the carrier, identify the handover point.

Use a timeline with separate milestones

Ask about specification approval, any production stage, readiness for dispatch, transport and final appointment. A desired move-in or celebration date belongs in the brief, but should not become a promised delivery date until the full arrangement is confirmed.

Agree who checks the delivery and how any issue should be recorded and reported under the order terms. Keep the approved specification, quotation and correspondence together so the receiving person knows what should arrive.

Your US enquiry brief

  • Collection links, quantities and preferred pieces.
  • Room and entrance-route measurements with units stated.
  • Finish and upholstery direction, with questions still open.
