Classical dining sets: how to coordinate a complete room

AVELOR Journal 27 October 2026

A dining set is more than a table and chairs. Plan storage, serving routes, finishes and what belongs in the quotation.

Sultan classical dining set in a formal room

A classical dining set works as a composition: table, chairs, storage and the space between them. Start by deciding how you host, then choose the pieces that support that routine. A complete showroom arrangement can inspire your room without becoming a shopping list that ignores its proportions.

This article focuses on coordinating AVELOR dining-room furniture. For table shape and room measurements, use the separate dining-room planning guide.

Begin with a dining scenario

Write down an ordinary meal and your larger hosting occasion. Who carries dishes into the room? Where do serving pieces wait? Will guests remain at the table after dinner, and is the room used for other activities? These answers help decide whether a sideboard, cabinet or additional occasional seating belongs in the brief.

Keep everyday seating needs separate from occasional capacity. Ask for a seating proposal based on the actual tabletop, leg positions and chair dimensions; do not count the chairs in a photograph as a guaranteed capacity.

Choose one leading element

A richly detailed table can lead the room while the wall treatment remains quieter. If the cabinet is the main decorative feature, give it a clear view and let the other pieces support its scale. Competing statement pieces can make it harder to appreciate the workmanship and outline of any one item.

For a connected living and dining space, repeat a chosen frame tone or upholstery colour instead of duplicating every accessory. The classical and neoclassical style guide helps you choose how much ornament should run through both rooms.

Check chairs against the table

Confirm chair width, arm height and the clearance beneath the tabletop or apron. Check that the proposed chairs can be used together at the intended positions. An armchair that looks right beside the table may not slide under it.

Ethan Allen’s dining-table buying guide uses around three feet of space between the table and surrounding walls or furniture as a planning reference. Your room, chairs and movement needs may require more. Test the arrangement with chairs pulled out and with the storage doors open, rather than relying on the table’s footprint alone.

Give storage a defined job

Decide what the sideboard or display cabinet will hold. Measure important serving pieces and note whether shelves, drawers or a clear top surface would be useful. Ask for internal dimensions when a particular item must fit. Open door swings, floor skirtings and sockets should appear on the plan.

Confirm any safety and installation requirements for the selected storage piece with the supplier and installer. Position the furniture against the real wall construction and access conditions of the room.

Write the full dining-set schedule

Item Decisions to record
Table Reference, dimensions, base arrangement and finish
Chairs Quantity, arm/side-chair mix, upholstery and fit
Sideboard Storage purpose, dimensions and door clearance
Display cabinet Internal space, location and installation requirements
Mirror and accessories Whether included, quoted separately or already owned

Shortlist the collection, then confirm the finish

Compare Nida dining, Riva dining and Sultan dining with the same schedule. Request close-up finish references and view them alongside the room’s floor and wall colours. Lighting and screens can change the way a tone appears, so identify the approved reference in writing.

Send the schedule, room plan and destination when you request a dining quotation. Confirm the included pieces, options, timing and delivery scope before ordering. A shorter, well-specified arrangement can serve the room better than a larger set selected only from a photograph.
